Ann R. Smaldon
Ann (Rossi) Smaldon, 72, of Rome, passed away Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009 at the Siegenthaler Center in New Hartford after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by her loving family and friends.
Ann was born September 21, 1936, the daughter of Ralph and Mary (Carro) Rossi. Ann graduated from Rome Free Academy in 1954 and was employed at Griffiss Air Force Base from 1954 to 1967 and also Rome DDSO from 1974 until her retirement in 1995.
On September 1, 1955 Ann was united in marriage to Arthur Smaldon in Baltimore, Maryland.
She was a member of St. John the Baptist Church.
An avid bowler, Ann thoroughly enjoyed her bowling trips with the girls. Ann also enjoyed reading, listening to music, and trips to the casino; however, her greatest joy came while spending time with her family and grandchildren.
Ann is survived by her husband Arthur, two sons and daughters-in-law, Raymond and Deborah Smaldon, Ralph and Colleen Smaldon and her daughter Sheri Hartness and fiance Robert Hughes, all of Rome. Two step-sons, Joseph and Michele Smaldon and Arthur Smaldon, of Ohio. Her grandchildren each of whom she loved dearly: Jenna Smaldon, Jonathan Smaldon, Jared Smaldon, Matthew Smaldon, Melissa Smaldon, Elaina Smaldon, Kyle Hartness, Katie Jones, Tony Smaldon, Michael Smaldon, and great-grandchildren, Henry Smaldon, Gabe Kelley and Ben Kelley. Also surviving are her sister, Betty Goodrich and brother, Ralph Rossi, her sisters-in-law, Bernice and Timothy Newton, Ruth and Joseph Fraccola, Calif., Camille Smaldon, of Calif., and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Ann was predeceased by her parents, her in-laws, Arthur and Dora Smaldon, Edward Smaldon, John Smaldon, Fred and Rosemary Francescone, Priscilla Rossi and Charles Goodrich.
The family would like to express their gratitude to all of the friends, family and neighbors who helped in our time of need. A heart-felt thank you also to the outstanding staff at Hospice and the Siegenthaler Center.
Funeral services will be held at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday from the Nicholas J. Bush Funeral Home, Inc., 218 W. Court St., and at 11:00 AM at St. John the Baptist Church. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4-7 PM.
