Obituary of Douglas Wayne Pekola

Douglas Wayne Pekola Douglas Wayne Pekola, 66, of Coleman Mills Road, passed away Monday, February 11, 2008 at home. He was born in Rome, N.Y. on June 27, 1941, Son of Stephen and Genevieve Pliska Pekola. Wayne Graduated from Rome Free Academy. He served with the U.S. Army in Germany during the Korean War. On October 12, 1968 he married Donna Ellinger. Mr. Pekola was employed by the City of Rome Public Works. Wayne was a member of St. John the Baptist Church. He was an avid Boy Scout Leader and also enjoyed hunting. He enjoyed creating stained glass designs and designing outdoor water ponds. Surviving besides his wife, Donna, are his mother, Genevieve Pekola, two sons and daughters-in-law, David and Michele Pekola, all of Rome, Douglas and Gina Pekola, Albany, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Jacob Tyler, Ashley Morgan, Samantha Lynn and Ryan Douglas; two sisters, Susan Ott, Floyd, Deborah Scherzi, Verona Beach. Also surviving are a niece, Stephanne and her husband Shawn Hanrahan, Rome; a nephew, James Scherzi and special friend Dana Stern, Clinton; several aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 11:00 a.m. at the Nicholas J. Bush Funeral Home, Inc., 218 W. Court St. Burial will be in St. Johns Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 4-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, American Heart Association, or the COPD Association.
