Gene Francis Lipe , 80, of Rome, passed away at Rome Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, October 31, 2007, after a courageous battle with cancer. Gene was born March 25, 1927 in Salmon City, Idaho to Horace O. and Bessie A. Lipe. On February 20, 1954 he married Madeleine M. Korman in Waynesville, Missouri. Gene was inducted into the Army in May 1945 and served in various units until his retirement on July 31, 1970. He proudly served in WW II and the Korean and Vietnam Wars. As a dedicated veteran, he belonged to the Holland Patent American Legion Post #161; the Stittville Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post #8259 and Disabled American Veterans Ft. Stanwix. He was the recipient of the Bronze Star Medal. After his service retirement, he managed the local Pinkerton Security Services and worked for Carls Drug Store, Inc. as head of security. Gene is survived by his wife Madeleine (Mickey); daughter, Jean F. Iselo, and son, Robert O. Lipe and his wife, Angela; grandchildren, Lisa A. Cushman, Lacee J. Iselo and special friend Matthew Hanley, Christopher A. Lipe, William F. Lipe and fiance Danielle Rash, Jonathan E. Lipe and their mother, Donna Lipe; and great granddaughters, Alyssa, Lyla and Michaela Cushman. Also surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Louise Elliott, Mrs. Daisy Durfee and Mrs. Beth Ann Inman and husband, Wayne, and sister-in-law, Mrs. Jesse Ray Lipe, all of Idaho, and Mrs.Wilhelmina Kornatowski, Rome, Mr. and Mrs. Isadore Paluck, Constableville, and Mr. and Mrs. William Korman, Ballston Spa, NY. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews in the local area and the mid west USA. He is predeceased by his parents and brothers, David Lipe and Oren Lipe, and son-in-law, Michael J. Iselo. Also special mention of close family friends who assisted and cheered Gene during the past year; Dick Krebs, Edward (Ezz) Kotary, Janice and Robert Mutton, Alice and Lyle Nickerson, Gary and Robin Zehr and Pete Thorsen. As an avid Country Western fan in his healthier years, he and Mickey enjoyed traveling around the United States to various national CW events. He was a member of and served as an officer of the Tammy Wynette and the Billy Jo Spears Fan Clubs. His passion in life was his family, especially his grandchildren and great granddaughters. His hobbies were wood working, playing cards with his best buddies and supporting the NYS lottery system. A special thanks to all who assisted Gene with professional and loving medical care: Dr. Richard Sullivan and staff; Dr. Atula Butala and staff, especially Diane and Renee; Rome Memorial Hospital Emergency Department and 2 North Staff; the Floyd Fire Department and AMCARE personnel. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at the Nicholas J. Bush Funeral Home, Inc., 218 W. Court St. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 4-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Disabled American Veterans or the American Cancer Society. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
