Jerome "Gilo" Alaimo
Jerome "Gilo" Alaimo, 91, of Rome, passed away Saturday, July 28, 2012 at St. Luke's Healthcare, New Hartford. He was born in Rome, NY, on January 16, 1921, son of the late Luigi and Frances Salvaggio Alaimo. Mr. Alaimo attended Rome schools and graduated from Rome Free Academy. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II in the infantry. On October 21, 1950, he married Mary "Mowie" Costello in St. John the Baptist Church. Mr. Alaimo retired from Griffiss Air Force Base after 30 years and was a former employee of General Cable Corp. and of Navelli Cadillac Dealership where he was employed for 25 years.
He was a member of St. John the Baptist Church and Transfiguration Church, Disabled American Veterans, H.P. Smith Post #24 American Legion, Ukrainian Club, Galliano Club, Polish Home, South Rome Senior Citizens Center, and Toccolana Club.
Surviving besides his wife Mowie are a daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Norman Lince, Rome; a son and daughter-in-law, Jerome Jr. and Mary Jo Alaimo, Jamesville, NY; two grandsons, Peter and Thomas Alaimo; a sister, Katherine Raines, Rome; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Storace, Rome. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews: Cordellia Urbanik, Rome; Ann and her husband George Kinnaman, Arizona; Shirley and her husband Carl Lanzi, Frank "Bunky" and his wife Karen Costello, Larry and his wife Toby Vergalito, Judy and her husband Jim Cortese, Carol and her husband Mike Sturbin, JoAnn Iannotti, all of Rome; Mike and his wife Nancy Costello, Canastota; Marilyn Sardina, Fran Eck, both of Utica; Mark and his wife Jennifer Costello, Rochester, NY; Prospine Dende, Scranton, PA. He was predeceased by a sister, Rose Sardina, and three brothers, Louis, Dominick, and John Alaimo.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 10:15 AM from the Nicholas J. Bush Funeral Home, Inc., 218 W. Court St., and at St. John the Baptist Church at 11:00 AM for a Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 4-7 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John the Baptist Church or Transfiguration Church.
