Obituary of Lawrence Tamburrino
Lawrence (Larry) Tamburrino
1938-2024
Lawrence (Larry) Tamburrino age 85 of Rome, passed away on Tuesday, September 17, 2024 at the Albany Medical Center after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Natalie (Panara) Tamburrino, and their three children, James Tamburrino, Larry Tamburrino, and Laurie Tamburrino, and three grandchildren, Michael Tamburrino, Ryan Tamburrino, and Anthony Tamburrino, a brother Alfred Tamburrino of Pompano Beach, Florida and a sister Maria Tamburrino of Berkley, California.
Larry was born on September 22, 1938, in Rome, NY, Son of Alfred P. Tamburrino and Jennie (D’Aiuto) Tamburrino, and was a graduate of Rome Free Academy. He studied Mathematics at Utica College, but specialized in hands on technical work throughout his career. After a little coaxing, Larry married Natalie Panara at St. John the Baptist Church on May 1, 1965.
Larry was a member of the Civil Air Patrol at a young age, and then a member of the NY National Guard. At the age of 22 he was deployed overseas to support the Berlin Airlift Crisis. When hands on, technical work needed to be done, they depended on Larry as he thrived in this area. After his return from overseas, he worked in several technical jobs, including working with his father at Rome Appliance Center. Eventually he was hired as an electronic technician by Rome Air Development Center where he single-handedly managed five test sites, Ava, Verona Optical, Forestport, Stockbridge, and Newport.
Larry and Natalie enjoyed many years of retirement, even though Larry’s zeal to fix everything never diminished. They enjoyed the time they spent with their children, grandchildren and beloved family dogs; Charlie, Gaius, Nicki, Max, Dozer, and presently Cooper. Natalie was stricken with a major handicap in 2004, and Larry was there by her side, using his hands on skills to develop different handicap assists for her. Larry’s last words were “Take care of mom”. Larry was a great support to his son Jimmy during his cancer treatments - his family always came first. Larry was proud to be a HAM operator and even though he never preached about his faith, he was quietly devout. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Church and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
