Although i did not know your son. I want to let you know your son Michael and your family are in our thoughts and prayers. When reading about Michael and learning that he played hockey and it was a passion of his tells me alot of what kind of a person he was. As a mom of a college hockey player myself (who happened to be mentored by Bob Shattell as well) I know the dedication, passion and hard work it takes to play from the player himself as well as his family. Clearly, your son was a driven, compassionate and dedicated officer. I feel your pain as Lt. Hoosock was a dear friend of ours and the past week has been like a bad dream. My heart is broken and my prayers go out to Michael's family. Words cannot express how I hurt for this family. I did not have the pleasure of knowing this brave young man but I worked with Michelle at Clough Elementary and worked at Toddler's Inn on base where Cindy and Rowe would drop off their child for child care. I did not know Michael but I felt the need to share my condolences. I think of my children around the same age as Michael and I can't even imagine the pain that his family and friends must be feeling right now. His obituary and several news articles show a wonderful young man. I wish you my deepest sympathy.

The loss of Mike was a loss to the entire community. Hannaford Supermarkets in Rome acknowledged this loss to the community by donating a large prime rib to be made by a volunteer for the family. We will miss you Mike and to the family, we all are grieving for your loss and the loss of a wonderful police officer who wanted to make a difference by keeping us safe. Our prayers are with you. He has one of the most handsome contagious smiles I’ve ever seen and we at the ER liked to see them in exchange for hand lotion and tuna sandwiches “made with love”. He was always so friendly and I looked forward the few times a week seeing him with Jimmy at the gym giving me a goofy look and waving. I work at the restaurant where the SPD had their Christmas party this past December. I remember serving Michael during this party, and all I can remember was the kind, outgoing, happy soul he was. I had also went to the same gym he had, and saw him in passing multiple times a week. We didn’t know each other on a personal basis at all, and had only ever spoke shortly that night of the party while I was working. But, he has been in my thoughts and prayers everyday this week. My heart hurts for him and everybody involved and affected. But I just wanted to send my love to his family, and say thank you for his service and being an amazing person. He is a hero.

I did not know this young officer but my heart hurts for him and his family. His life was cut short for no reason. He is with God now but he will always be remembered for the fine officer that he was. My condolences to his family and to all law enforcement officers. May he rest in peace. I hope and pray that God gives everyone involved strength to get through this.

I am so very, very sorry for your great loss. I never had the honor of meeting Michael. I live in Rochester and was so saddened to learn of Michael's death. If you read this before Michael's funeral, perhaps you might consider having the following poem read. I'll be 83 in a week and this is one of the things my daughter will have read at my funeral. God bless Michael and all who cared for him.
The Dash by Linda Ellis
I read of a man who stood to speak
at the funeral of a friend
He referred to the dates on the tombstone
from the beginning...to the end.
He noted that first came the date of birth
and spoke the following date with tears,
but he said what mattered most of all
was the dash between those years.
For that dash represents all the time
that they spent alive on earth.
And now only those who loved them
know what that little line is worth.
For it matters not, how much we own --
the cars...the house...the cash.
What matters is how we live and love
and how we spend our dash.
So, think about this long and hard.
Are there things you'd like to change?
For you never know how much time is left
that can still be rearranged.
If we could just slow down enough
to consider what's true and real,
and always try to understand
the way other people feel.
And be less quick to anger
and show appreciation more,
and love the people in our lives
like we've never loved before.
If we treat each other with respect
and more often wear a smile,
remembering this special dash
might only last a little while.
So, when your eulogy is being read
with your life's actions to rehash,
would you be proud of the things they say
about how you spent YOUR dash?
