I worked with Steve at the DDSO, ( as it was called), during the 1980s. Steve volunteered to go with , “the clients”, to a week of winter camping at Raquette Lake, in January. Steve was worried about an impending snow storm, and, that we needed to drive the state vans across the frozen lake to our camping destination. Steve ended up falling in love with the beauty of the Adirondacks. I feel good as he told me that I was the person who introduced him to the Adirondacks. Over the years, in passing, Steve and I would share our stories about adventures in the Adirondacks.
Most importantly, I remember Steve as a caring person to the special people he served, some of who were quite challenging. He was a kind hearted person who had a good perspective on life. I’m sure he is smiling now.

When Steve was stationed in Vietnam I was I High school. I wrote to him fairly frequently. He always responded. While “cleaning out” several years ago I read through the letters I had saved from him and tossed them on a fire with others. Even though they all said basically the same things; now I wish I had saved them. After all, in the grand scheme of things, a few letters don’t take up very much room and they are irreplaceable. I remember he had very legible handwriting.
