Louis "Skip" A. Schipano Jr.
Louis "Skip" A. Schipano Jr., 77, of Rome, passed away Thursday, March 18, 2010 at Albany Medical Center with his family by his side.
He was born in Rome, NY on September 11, 1932, son of the late Luigi and Antoinette Condella Schipano.
Lou attended Rome Schools. He served with the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict.
On May 24, 1958 he married Rosemary "Rosie" Debonzo. She passed away October 1, 2007.
Lou retired from Griffiss Air Force Base where he was an employee for over 35 years. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Church, Floyd Horseshoe Club, and life-time member of the Stanwix Veterans' and Men's Club and VFW Post #2246.
Surviving are five daughters and four sons-in-law, and a deceased son-in-law. Antoinette and Ronald Lamascolo, Barbara Calandra and the late Dennis Calandra, Christine and Brian Storms, JoAnn and Robert Marshall, all of Rome; Kathleen and Frank Boger, Staasburg, NY; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Louis Schipano III, and Peter and Louise Schipano, all of Rome; 22 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are three sisters, a special sister Palma Ciotti, Rome; Mary DeBonzo, Alabama; and Caroline Versace, Rome; and several nieces and nephews, including a special nephew Spero Harritatos.
He was predeceased by five brothers, Patsy Belmont, Frank Belmont, Peter Belmont, Guy Belmont and Tony Schipano; three sisters, Nora Harritatos, Rosie Cardillo, and Michellina Belmont; and a son-in-law, Dennis Calandra.
Pop was a quiet and gentle man who was very devoted to his family. He enjoyed gardening and horseshoes, but what he enjoyed the most were his grandchildren, especially his "little buddies," Lucca(y), Santino, and Mason.
Funeral services will be held on Monday at 10:15 a.m. from the Nicholas J. Bush Funeral Home, Inc., 218 W. Court St., and at St. John the Baptist Church at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 3-7 p.m.
