1937 - 2026

Carl Edward Urtz Sr., 88, of Rome, New York, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at Wynn Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter’s Church, 200 N. James St. Rome, NY, (today) Friday, August 14, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends and loved ones prior to the Mass from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at St. John the Baptist Cemetery, East Dominick Street, Rome.

Carl was born in Rome, NY, on November 14, 1937, to the late, Leo F. Urtz and Marjorie W. Urtz. He attended Rome Free Academy and graduated with the Class of 1956. After high school, he served in the National Guard for seven years.  On April 19, 1958, Carl married Mae Piccola, in St. John the Baptist Church, Rome, NY, a loving union of 68 years.  Carl went on to work for Revere Copper and Brass for 42 years, where he held many positions throughout his long and dedicated career.

He had many interests and talents. He enjoyed woodworking and creating beautiful stained-glass pieces. Above all, he cherished the time he spent with his family, especially the memories made together at camp.

Carl is survived by his beloved wife, Mae P. Urtz of Rome; his two sons, Carl Urtz III and his wife, Karyn, of Rome, and Dean Urtz and his wife, Christine, of Massachusetts. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Arica Briggs and her husband, Craig; Philip Urtz and his wife, Jessica; Hannah Todora and her husband, David; and Aria Urtz, as well as many great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Marjorie Urtz; his brother, Leo Urtz; his son, Carl Urtz Jr.; and his granddaughter, Monica Mae Urtz.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Carl’s name to: Children’s Miracle Network c/o Mohawk Valley Health System, 1676 Sunset Avenue, Utica, NY 13502.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all of the staff at Wynn Hospital for the compassionate care they provided to Carl and his family, with a special thank-you to Dr. Choudry for his exceptional care and kindness.

Carl will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew and loved him. His memory will live on in the many lives he touched and in the countless memories shared with those closest to him.
